Eloi Calame

*Eloi looks out of the window and sees two spots of light on the building opposite, reflecting the morning sun in his eyes. The fresh dawn gives the plaster otherworldly colours, the buildings are transformed, the empty street blows fog, the trees tremble. Rhythms and sounds are created on the fences and lampposts. Clarinet notes are entangled in them. Led by the staff, he flies away.

Eloi as a child, as an adult, as a teenager, goes in search of adventure. He travels through cities and continents, at the whim of the wind rose. In the Eastern desert, he discovers the rose of the sands and the fossils of languages. Along the Nile, he meets the rose of foxes and the aftermath of colours.

Listening to the impermanence of the world and searching for its resonances, Eloi chooses music as his journey and language.*

Eloi Calame is a composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist (clarinet, saxophone, flute). With a Bachelor’s degree in jazz from the HDK in Bern and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and a Master’s degree from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, he navigates between contemporary classical music and modern jazz. He has developed numerous projects with musicians from Egypt, Palestine and Latin America. Through these collaborations he explores how to integrate these multiple influences into his music in a respectful way. He is also the founder and curator of Arboretum, a platform for experimentation open to all forms of artistic practice. He currently tours with the Eloi Calame 4tet (bass clarinet, tenor sax, double bass and drums).
